Mr. Rafael Calderón
President of Mexico
Los Pinos Official Residence
Mexico City, Mexico
cc: Attorney General of Mexico
Mr. President,
The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has been investigating the murder of journalists in the Americas, coming to the conclusion that in the majority of cases that there have been delays in administering justice due to negligence, apathy and irregularities. In many of these situations the police inquiries and legal proceedings have inexplicably stalled and rather have become obstacles to the action aimed at bringing those responsible for the crimes to justice.
The IAPA is determined to bring an end to this impunity, a task in which it has the full backing of the international community. That is why we take the liberty of calling your attention to the death of American journalist Bradley Roland Will.
The documentary writer for Indymedia New York was shot to death in Oaxaca on October 27, 2006 during a clash between activists and members of the Popular Assembly of Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO). The investigations to identify those responsible have not produced any results, and that is why the participation of a group of international experts that have offered to collaborate with the Mexican Attorney General’s Office is now awaited.
We request your intervention, Mr. President, and that of the Attorney General of Mexico, to speed up the investigation so that this crime may be solved.
Only in this way will the death of this journalist on Mexican soil not become just another statistic in the list of unsolved murders in the Americas.
Sincerely,
|
