november 19, 2009
Mr. President,

The international community is shaken by the wave of violence against journalists and news media in Mexico without there being pursued in most cases an investigation to identify those responsible and thus the crime goes unpunished.

So far this year 10 journalists have been murdered in Mexico in the spiraling violence and impunity battering the country. On November 2 there occurred the abduction and then the discovery of the body with signs of torture of reporter Bladimir Antuna García, 38, from the Durango newspaper El Tiempo.

We would ask you, and through your good offices all Mexican federal senior officials, to re-establish the legal mechanisms enabling the violence unleashed against journalists to be confronted.

For that, in addition to the authorities paying greater attention to this serious situation what is needed is that crimes against freedom of expression be made federal offenses, and we trust that the National Congress will reinstate the special committee set up to deal with attacks upon journalists and news media.

Sincerely,
