Date of murder: September 8, 1986

Motives: Reprisal for the failed assassination attempt on dictator Augusto Pinochet one day earlier in the outskirts of Santiago by the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR). Pinochet was not harmed in the attack, but five of his guards died.

Date of conviction: December 30, 2006, by a lower court.

Convicted of the murder: Former Army Maj. Álvaro Corbalán Castilla, chief of operations of the National Intelligence Center (CNI), sentenced to 18 years in prison, and varying sentences for other agents from the same secret agency.

Violent results: Shot 13 times against a cemetery wall after being abducted from his home in the presence of his sons, both of them minors.

Previous journalistic work: Editor of Punto Final magazine up until the time of the military coup. Collaborator for the Buenos Aires weekly El Periodista and the Caracas newspaper El Diario.

Distinctions: Metropolitan representative of the Chilean Journalists Association. Active member of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR).
