Four resolutions concerning the murder of journalists adopted at the conclusion of the IAPA’s General Assembly in Buenos Aires in November have been sent to 78 government entities in Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico calling for action to spur investigations and legal proceedings in murder cases occurring during the year and in other so-far unpunished crimes.
At each of the IAPA’s half-yearly meetings members adopt resolutions – official documents that contain summaries of requests, petitions and/or demands concerning specific topics that are sent by mail to the authorities of the countries in question.
The resolutions, posted at http://www.impunidad.com/index.php?showresoluciones=all&idioma=sp&id=24, called on the governments of five countries among other things to take urgent and forceful action to ensure the safety of journalists, demanded that investigations into murders and legal proceedings in such cases bring to justice not only those who carried out the murders but also those behind them, and urged that stalled investigations into old cases that continue to go unpunished be reactivated and show progress.
