Another arrest made in murder of news photographer Christian Poveda
By Ernesto Pérez

An alleged gang member that the National Civil Police (PNC) have linked to the murder of news photographer Christian Poveda was arrested on May 6 in the El Salvador capital, San Salvador.

Officials have identified the man as Iván Antonio Leiva and accused him of having been one of those that carried out the murder of the author of the documentary “La Vida Loca” (The Mad Life), an audiovisual production that depicts the daily lives of Salvadorean gangs.

The PNC’s communication office is due to present Leiva to the local press in the next few hours.

Poveda, of Franco-Spanish nationality, was murdered on September 2 last year in the El Rosario district, on a highway linking Soyapango and Tonacatepeque.

Several days later five persons – a police officer and four alleged gang members – were arrested for having taking part in the crime.

Then in December, 19 alleged gang members were accused by police and officials of the pubic prosecutor’s office of having been involved in the murder.

And in February this year three youths who were getting ready for a soccer match at the Montes IV stadium in Soyapango were arrested on a charge of having participated in the murder.
