Police act on four unpunished crimes against journalists in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (March 11, 2011)—The Honduras government reported today that the National Police have arrested those allegedly responsible for the murder of four journalists in the Central American country, while investigations are moving ahead to solve seven other such crimes.

It was Security Minister Oscar Álvarez who told the press of this outcome, achieved, he said, “with the support of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Colombia intelligence services” and it was now up to the courts to hand down the respective convictions.

The information was given following a meeting that Álvarez had with the president of the Honduras Journalists Guild (CPH), Juan Ramón Mairena, who called on the government to act to have the crimes against journalists solved and publicly announce the steps taken.

During the General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) in Mérida, Mexico, in November the organization had expressed concern at the lack of punishment reigning in Honduras regarding violence unleashed against news media buildings and the death of 11 journalists.
