The battle against impunity is intense, IAPA report notes
IAPA

Impunity Committee Chairman Juan Francisco Ealy Ortiz of the Mexico City, Mexico, newspaper El Universal, presented the report on the committee’s activities at the Midyear Meeting of the Inter American Press Association, detailing the intensive work being carried out by the organization to put an end to the guilty going unpunished.

“The outcome is difficult to summarize, because it consists of important advances and relevant achievements but also painful episodes that continue raising our indignation,” Ealy Ortiz told the delegates at the meeting held April 6 to 9 in San Diego, California.

He reported as positive developments, among others, the lengthening of the statute of limitations in cases of the murder of journalists in Colombia, convictions for a murder in El Salvador, and the creation of a special jurisdiction in Peru to handle cases of violence unleashed against news men and women. But he contrasted this with the acts of violence that in the last six months have left five journalists dead and another missing.
