The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today expressed repudiation of the murder in Mexico of women journalists Ana María Marcela Yarce Viveros and Rocío González Trápaga and called on officials not to discard any theory as to the motive, despite the fact that it was thought initially that it might have been a common crime or an anti-feminist act.

Miami (August 31, 2011)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today praised the academic commitment made by Latin American universities during its recent Hemisphere Conference of Universities held in Mexico. During the conference legal reforms to combat violence against the press were recommended, along with changes in degree courses to adapt them to the reality that the press faces today.

The Inter-American Human Rights Court on June 28 and 29 held at its headquarters in San José, Costa Rica, a public hearing in the case of González Medina and next of kin v. Dominican Republic, in which were heard “the statements of one of the alleged victims, two eye-witnesses, one proposed by the representatives of the alleged victims and the other proposed, ex oficio, by the Court, and an expert proposed by the Inter-American Commission and the representatives of the alleged victims,” the Court reported in a press release.
