The bus she was traveling in to Roncesvalles, together with a local official, was intercepted by members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who forced the two women to get out of the bus. They shot Obando and kidnapped the official, whose body was later found.

In October 2004 the State Attorney’s Office ordered the arrest of Gustavo Bocanegra Ortegón, alias Donald, saying he was the mastermind. Bocanegra is chief of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Ibagué.
