Around 9:00 p.m. he was in a bar chatting with its owner, who went out and one of two individuals on a motorcycle shot the journalist several times.

On April 25, 2008 military policemen Luis Carlos Groul and Eduardo Moreira da Silva were arrested and transferred to the Romão Gomes military penitentiary.
On March 4, 2008 militarty police officers Valenei Bertoni, Paulo César Ronceiro, Edson Luiz Ronceiro and Adélcio Carlos Avelino were charged and placed in preventive detention.
Arrested in mid-February was merchant Carlos Alberto da Costa, accused of being the owner of the weapon used in the crime.

On April 25, 2008 it was reported that the weapon used in Baron’s murder, a 12-caliber rifle, is the same one used in the attempt on the life of a teenager that occurred several minutes after the journalist was killed.
In early March 2008 the key witness to the crime, Alcino Antico, owner of the tavern where the journalist was kiilled, publicly revealed that he had received threats from one of those allegedly involved, Capt. Adélcio Carlos Avelino.
