Orico Rodrigues was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment on a charge of aggravated homicide in the murder of television show host José Carlos Mesquita. The court issued the sentence on September 26. Mesquita was murdered on March 10, 1998 as he was leaving the Televisão Ouro Verde TV studios in Ouro Preto do Oeste, Rondônia state, Brazil.
Accused with Rodrigues was a man known only as Nivaldo, who remains at large. Another defendant, Gerim Ferreira Lacerda, was himself murdered on April 19, 1999.
On September 29, Ouro Preto do Oeste police chief Marco Antônio Ribeiro D’Alessandro said that he had no details of the case as he had arrived in the city only recently and that as sentence had already been pronounced it was now in the appeal stage and therefore the police were not involved at this point. The director general of the State Civil Police, Carlos Eduardo Ferreira, said he would ask the local police chief to report to him on the matter and if there were any leads concerning the fugitive suspect and who might have masterminded the murder.
