Benjamín Flores was murdered on July 15, 1997, at the age of 29. He was the editor of the daily newspaper La Prensa in the city of San Luis Río Colorado. The motive for his murder is to be found in the publication of his exposures of drug traffickers and wrongdoing by politicians.

The authorities never looked at what he had written. Nor did they follow up various leads, only the one that pointed to the involvement of a suspect nicknamed “El Jaimillo.” Overall, the inquiries were carried out in a hasty fashion and without any depth but with lots of inconsistencies, meaning that some officials might have acted incompetently or even criminally.

Four arrest warrants have been issued have been issued since 1997 but there have been no arrests. Apparently there was been no record of any inquiry into the whereabouts of these four fugitives since 1998 – if there had been, it would be clear that they were still being pursued, so it is not unreasonable to think that the warrants are sleeping the sleep of the just.

The staff at La Prensa remain interested in the case. They continue publishing a page in black where Flores’ column used to appear.

Those accused in the case were:
