Place and circumstances of murder: He was shot five times as he arrived at his home, also the location of the newspaper A Verdade. He had parked his car in the garage of No. 5 Eduardo Portela Street in the Magé-Mirim neighborhood in Magé, in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro state. He had already opened the garage door and was going in to park the car when he was approached by the killer, who fired a first shot that hit the car's window. Coelho escaped through the passenger door and ran in the direction of a vacant lot on the same street. There he was shot five times and died. Police investigations indicate that the murderer had been watching Coelho for at least four days. Moments before the murder, he had visited the Raio do Sol Bakery and Bowling Alley located on the corner of the street where he lived and from where his house could be seen.

Probable motive: Allegations published in A Verdade concerning mishandling of public funds by politicians in the Baixada Fluminense region.
