The last two of the six accused in the July 5, 1989 murder of gossip columnist Maria Nilce dos Santos Magalhães were due to go to trial on December 11, 2006. But the defense attorney of Romualdo Eustáqueo da Luz Faria, known as Japonés, claimed his client was mentally incompetent to stand trial and managed to suspend proceedings against him. He will now undergo medical examination to determine his mental state. And police officer César Narcizo da Silva was acquitted on a 4-3 vote by the jury in the Vítoria circuit court.
Maria Nilce’s murder has not gone totally unpunished – on September 5 this year José Alayr Andreatta. accused of being the one that ordered the murder, was convicted and sentence to 13 years’ imprisonment. Airline pilot Marcos Egydio Costa, who flew the alleged culprits to another state, was sentenced to nine years and four months in prison. Andreatta’s and Costa’s defense attorneys appealed sentence. Also accused of taking part the crime were police officer Charles Roberto Lisboa, who claimed mental incompetence and will undergo a medical examination in May 2007, and Josdé Sasso, who died in prison in 1992.
Maria Nilce dos Santos Magalhães was a gossip columnist and editor of Jornal da Cidade in Vitória, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. She was murdered on July 5, 1989. shortly before her death she had threatened in her column to expose information about people said to be involved in drug trafficking and organized crime in the state.
